Diving
Puerto
Galera is a great 'all year round' dive destination, the water
temperature varies from
between 22c in
February, to 29c in May and June
and it's unusual for the visibility to drop below 15m. Big tidal
exchanges
make for some exciting drift dives, in fact during the
summer months we can treat you to some of the most
challenging dives you're ever likely to go on.
'Kilima
Drift' is a favorite for those who prefer roller-coaster
dives, but if you prefer a leisurely hour at 12m, 'Coral
Gardens' and 'West Escarceo' have unbeatable Table Corals, Fans,
Basket Sponges and smaller aquatic life. If you want to venture
further a field there are some great day trips to either Verde
Island and the famous "Drop Off" or the volcanic
"Hot Springs" at Chicken Feather Island where you can
sit at a depth of 20m watching hot bubbles rise from the ocean
floor.
Puerto
is also a convenient starting place for five-day
liveaboard trips to Apo Reef and the Wrecks of Coron.
A
feature of recent developments has been Dive Center
collaboration. Several wooden boats have been sunk which have
all made interesting sites and two years ago dive operators in
the area got together to create "The Puerto Galera Dive
Association". Since it's conception the association has
worked to improve safety, dive shop communication, community
involvement and general diving within Puerto Galera. The
association meets monthly and is currently working on, amongst
other things, conservation in the area and mooring improvements.
Last year the Association leased with The University of the
Philippines and assisted in a successful Giant Clam seeding
project.
Diving

32 dive sites just 5 to 15 minutes travel from the dive center

Puerto Galera Dive Sites
There
are dives for all levels, from easy training dives amongst
pristine coral to high-voltage drift dives. Diving is a
year-round activity. The 30+ dive sites are all within a 10-15
minute boat ride from the beach, which makes for easy and
convenient dive planning. Groups are kept to six divers or less
and are always lead by Atlantis’ experienced guides.
All the dive sites are replete with huge numbers of splendid
fish (triggerfish, parrotfish, pennantfish, moray eels,
surgeonfish, snappers, groupers, Moorish idol, lizardfish,
gobies, batfish, lionfish, trumpetfish, pufferfish, filefish,
emperors, wrasses, fusiliers and trevally). Invertebrates from
the tiniest transparent shrimp and neon-colored nudibranchs to
huge basket sponges adorned with hundreds of multi-colored
crinoids; anemones, sea cucumbers, starfish, worms and fire
corals reside with vast numbers of hard and soft corals and
gorgonian sea fans. Turtles, octopus, cuttlefish, Manta rays,
Eagle rays and sharks make guest appearances.
Tours and
Activities
Puerto
Galera also offers numerous isolated coves and beaches just
waiting for your visit, there are not many places left in the
world where you can have a whole beach to yourself. Kayaking,
hiking, swimming and snorkeling add to the list of non-diving
activities. Some of the best views are from Ponderosa, a
nine-hole golf course 1, 400 feet up a near-by mountain.
Beach
and Island Hopping
Big
La Laguna Beach
It
is only about ten minutes walk from Atlantis Dive Resort if you
don't want to go very far. There is an area where you can lie
down on the beach and do your sun tanning. No need bring food
because there is a restaurant where you can have lunch. This is
suitable for kids to play on the beach, go for swim and
snorkeling.
Haligi
Beach
A
fifteen minutes easy boat ride west of Sabang Beach. A good day
out where you
can have barbeque on the beach and bring your own drinks. There
are some vendors on the beach that sells pearls and necklaces.
Bayanan
Beach
Privately
owned half a kilometer beach which is thirty minutes boat ride.
This a lot quieter beach but not much shade during midday. Best
time to go is in the afternoon when the sun is setting.
Long
Beach
It's
in the same direction as Haligi Beach. Good spot for snorkeling
and swimming specially for kids.
White
Beach
A
kilometer of white sand beach just after
Bayanan
Beach
, where you can relax and have a good swim in the ocean when
it's a little bit too hot. You have the great view of the sunset
in the afternoon. There you will find some souvenir shops where
you can buy some presents for a reasonable price.
Excursions
and Sports
Kayaking
Sea
kayaks are available for rent; one and two seater.
Snorkeling
For
nearly 50 years Puerto Galera has attracted scientists studying
the Eco-structure of microorganisms, animals and plants. As for
diving, snorkeling is famous for its diversity and guests return
time after time to marvel at creatures large and small. This is
something for the whole family! There are many deserted beaches
in the vicinity, and most are easily accessible. Ask our Dive
Team for recommendations! You can also rent snorkeling equipment
for the day from reception, or purchase mask, fins & snorkel
from our Underwater World shop.
Sunset Cruise
This
is Atlantis' beautiful sightseeing tour around Puerto
Galera
Bay
and it’s untouched beaches. Usual departure time
around 4p.m. (Back at Atlantis around 7p.m.). Enjoy drinks and
snacks while you relax with people from all over the world.

Tamaraw
Falls
Located
just 14 km from Puerto Galera and near the
village
of Villaflor. Taste the sweet natural spring water as you enjoy the
outstanding scenery, the old growth forest, and beautiful rock
formations. Bathe in the pools, bask in the sun, and just relax!
Mangyan
Valley
The
Mangyans are the aborigines of Mindoro. These "nomads of
nature" use to travel in entire
families from one place to another by foot, but settled years
ago in the mountains. You will witness their daily life of
primitive survival. Their huts are so small and simple that
their shelter can be built in a matter of days. Because of their
roving ways, they can be difficult to locate, so it's advisable
to take an Atlantis guide if you wish to visit them.
Excavation
Museum
Located
in front of the church, the museum displays antique coins jars,
lamps, swords and other priceless artifacts from the early
Chinese and Spanish trading period. Those were salvaged from
shipwrecks and sunken vessels in the area.
Mt.
Baclayan
Is
the only barangay mountain in Puerto Galera and majority of
people who live here are from Mangyan Tribes. Neophyte hikers
and trekkers would rather take this for it's only an hour from
the drop off to the mountain top. From here you will be able to
see the embracing water and mountain of Puerto Galera.
Tukuran
or Hidden Paradise
A
45min jeepney ride from town of Puerto Galera to the drop off. A
real fun and hiking that you need to pass the four (4) rivers
and see the natural made wonders of stream rivers. This also
gives you the chance to cross the half kilometer infamous
hanging-bridge. If you're a nature lover this is a must activity
for you.
Mt.
Malasimbo
Located
at the far west side of Puerto Galera and one of the most
favorite summit of trained mountaineers. Passing thru its trail
you may have the chance to see rare animals such as wild boars,
deer and the endangered animal of Mindoro, the Tamaraw, plus
lots of natural habitats and variety of orchids.

Medical Information and Evacuation
This
is a brief overview of facilities and services available to you
if you were taken sick or to be injured while on holiday. Puerto
Galera is full of adventure and fun, but it is a remote
destination in terms of comprehensive medical care.
At Atlantis: We have a full Emergency Assistance Plan that
covers communication with other resorts, local hospitals and
chambers. It also covers evacuation by sea and Air Force
Helicopter. Atlantis has two full O2 kits and first aid
kits.
In Sabang: There is a 24 hour doctor's clinic with a doctor on
call‚ at all times; they could be in the resort within 5-10
minutes. Local medical supplies are limited.
In Puerto Galera (5km from Atlantis): There is one clinic that
is a basic doctor's surgery facility equipped with more
comprehensive supplies & drugs than Sabang. Puerto Galera
also has two full pharmacies.
In Batangas (30km from Atlantis): Batangas is about ninety
minutes from Atlantis by boat and does have two adequate
hospitals including St. Patrick's. These are equipped with a
full pharmacy and life support equipment and operating theatre,
plus recompression chamber.
In Manila (120km from Atlantis): Comprehensive medical care is
available at Makati Medical Center and V. Luna Hospital /
Chamber. This would be the most likely destination in the event
of serious illness or injury. The hospitals provide
European standard‚ of care. Manila is about 3 hours by
boat and ambulance or about 40 minutes by helicopter (allow 50
minutes for the helicopter to reach Atlantis).
